The Dubliners History
In 1962 the band started playing together under the name “The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group” which regularly performed in the O’Donoghue’s Pub in Dublin. The band soon changed their name due to Ronnie’s dislike of the name and as Kelly happened to be reading James Joyce book ‘Dubliners’ at the time, they’ve been known as the Dubliners ever since.
The Dubliners became very popular also outside of Ireland as pioneers for Irish folk music outside of Ireland. Their recording os the ‘The Black Velvet Band’ and the ‘Seven Drunken Nights’ were heavily promoted on pirate radio stations at the time. Because of this, both records reachedthe top 20 in the UK pop charts. However, after another hit single in 1967, the Dubliners did not have another UK hit single until they recorded together with The Pogues in 1987.
The Dubliners was also admired by other famous musician’s such as Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd which helped the bands popularity outside the Irish music fans.
